Can i sue the police department/officer for slander.?

Several months ago my husband stole from a store, the store didn't press charges and it seemed although everything would be fine. Recently we saw the investigating officer and they were upset that no action had been taken. They said "I'm gonna fix this and make sure the store presses charges". A week later my husband and I are arrested and jailed. I'm in the military, they arrested me at work and I didn't even do anything I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The probably cause paperwork was full of lies bringing my character into question--now I might get kicked out of the military. This has to be wrong. Can I sue either the officer or the department?
