What else can cars run on besides gas and how can you install the stystem?

me and my friend are wanting to get an astro van, no there's no changing that. that's what we want, but we hear that the gas mileage on them aren't that great. so we want to look into other substitutions we could use instead of gas. anyone know of any links and such?
